Kendallville Indiana to Napoleon Ohio - 70 Miles

By Erwin:

As expected, today would have been almost over before I realized it had started, but then Lucija caused some excitement... (I am sure she will tell you all about it)...

The route led us first through some rolling hills and then through a very flat section. Most of the land was used for farming soy beans and corn. The landscape was pretty, but the heat and humidity was tough to deal with. It was so humid, it felt like we were in a Turkish steam bath...

The highlight of the day was a perfectly located ice-cream shop, about 2 miles before camp. The ice cream was pretty good and together with pecans and chocolate, it was a great way to get our blood sugar back up... ride to eat, eat to ride..:-)

Tomorrow, the winds will turn against us, so the going should get a little tougher. Still, northern Ohio is pretty flat, so I expect not too much trouble. We'll see!

By Lucija:

Today had two highlights...  the first was the ohio-indiana state line.  Hard to believe that we are already in our 10th state, with only 3 to go, and that's counting Washington DC!  The second  highlight was our last rest stop, just 15 miles or so outside of Napoleon.  After sitting around in the shade, snacking on my PB&J sandwich, and munching on some cherries, I got up to get bike and be on my way.  Turns out that I walked by a hidden wasp nest and got stung by one of the wasps.  I couldn't believe it - the wasp literally flew out of the nest, headed for my leg, bit me, and flew back.  It was my first time to be stung by a wasp and I was absolutely shocked by how much it hurt!  Everyone around me was such a trooper.  Ashe, one of the other riders had some antidote stuff to rub on it and a Barbara our volunteer found me some ice to put over it in no time.  Eventually the throbbing got better and we headed on...
